About the Agency Follow us on Twitter

The Cowles-Ryan Agency was founded in 1998 and has built its business on quality nonfiction books for a general audience. Our interests include health, nature, narrative, memoir, food, and select photography/illustrated books. We are interested in finding books that have a clear mission and a substantial audience.

The Agency works with authors to clarify and craft their book proposals, editing their manuscripts and uniquely positioning their projects for sale to publishers. We sell books, e-books, and related rights primarily to major commercial publishers located in New York and San Francisco. We work to develop and expand our authors’ careers in publishing, supporting them in all of their publishing endeavors. We are our clients’ partners in the business of publishing.

We sell our authors’ columns and articles to various newspapers, magazines, and websites, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Hearst Magazine Group, and Conde Nast Publications.

The Agency works to sell feature film and television rights, co-agenting with a leading New York law firm on these transactions.

We sell non-book rights, including iPhone apps, sponsorships, endorsement deals, merchandise, and other product rights to major corporations such as Mercedes-Benz, Intel, Unilever, and American Express.

We advocate for our clients at every stage of the publishing process. We aggressively negotiate contracts and develop publicity and marketing strategies that will offer our clients’ books the best chance of reaching a wide audience.
